God’s Promises for the American Patriot by Richard Lee and Jack Countryman is an excellent book that presents the historical events of our country and forefathers combined with Biblical scripture support for the ideas presented. The book could be used as a devotional as the chapters are fairly short and each is accompanied by several Bible verses that relate to the facts being presented.
A total of ninety-seven historical events and figures are profiled in the book. One of my favorite chapters was “The Bible and American Presidents.” This chapter presented quotes from prominent Presidents about their opinions of the Bible and its place in our society. My favorite quote was from Ronald Reagan who said, “Inside the Bible’s pages lie all the answers to all of the problems man has ever known…The Bible can touch our hearts, order our minds, and refresh our souls.” Another chapter, “Circuit Riders and Farmer-Preachers,” told the story of how Methodists and Baptists kept up with America’s move west in the late 1700s by having preachers go where the people went.
This book is an excellent presentation of how the Bible has been a foundation of our country from the start and would be a recommended read for anyone that has a passion for the history of our great country. It would also serve as a reminder to anyone in our government today of the principles this country was founded on!

Jolt! by Phil Cooke
Jolt: Get the Jump on a World That’s Constantly Changing by Phil Cooke is a great self-help book that details how to navigate our constantly changing personal and business lives. It provides key tips on how to effectively deal with the change brought about by a rapidly changing culture that is both disruptive and potentially overwhelming.
The twenty-five chapters in the book are divided into five sections that include: “Jolt Your Direction,” Jolt What Matters,” Jolt Your Potential,” Jolt Your Heart,” and Jolt Your Future.” Chapters like “Better Choices” include information on how your decisions shape your life and how to make better decisions using all of the information at your disposal. The book uses quotes from a variety of sources to emphasize points in each chapter. While a good amount of the information has been presented in other self-help books, I enjoyed how this book was formatted and the way the information was presented.
This would be a good read for anyone that is having difficulty managing today’s rapidly changing culture. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to improve their lives.

Galileo by Mitch Stokes
Galileo by Mitch Stokes is part of the Christian Encounters series from Thomas Nelson Publishing. It presents a biography of Galileo that shows how he was basically an outsider during his whole life, due to his views and perceptions of the world and how it worked. Galileo’s father was responsible for instilling this attitude towards authority, he was quoted as saying “It appears to me, that they who rely simply on the weight of authority to prove any assertion, without searching out the arguments to support it, act absurdly. I wish to question freely and to answer freely without any sort of adulations. That well becomes any who are sincere in the search for truth.”
The book also tells of Galileo’s personal struggles with his faith at having been basically condemned by the church for his scientific views of the earth. He felt his cause was just both scientifically and theologically. He was first and foremost a Christian.
I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in history and the role that faith played in Galileo’s life.

Johann Sebastian Bach by Rich Marschall
Johann Sebastian Bach by Rick Marschall is part of the Christian Encounters series from Thomas Nelson Publishing. It presents a biography of Bach that includes both his music and his faith. The book does a good job on offering a complete picture of Bach even though there is little information available as Bach was not one for introspection.
I was interested to learn that Bach came from a very musical family, full of composers stretching back hundreds or years. It was also interesting to find out how much faith played a role in Bach’s compositions. This is a great book for the history lover!
I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in history or music and the faith that intertwines!

Unsinkable by Abby Sunderland
Unsinkable: A Young Woman’s Courageous Battle on the High Seas is the story of Abby Sunderland, who at 16 tried to become the youngest person to ever sail solo, nonstop, and unassisted around the world. And it is an amazing story indeed, the logistics are intricate and the obstacles sometimes insurmountable. Abby survives the attempt after becoming disabled in the Indian Ocean.
The book tells Abby’s story from her point of view. She explains how the trip changed her life and increased her faith in God and in her own abilities. She not only completed a geographical voyage, but a voyage of personal discovery as well. It is a great story of perseverance, faith and personal growth!
I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in sailing or wants to accomplish their own goal in life, it is truly inspiring!

Tandem by Tracey Bateman
Tandem by Tracey Bateman is a good Christian fiction book that delves into the currently popular world of vampires. It is Bateman’s second visit to the fictional town of Abbey Hills, Missouri. It is well-written and has a well-developed plot that tells the story of Lauren McBride who is an auctioneer that has been tasked with settling the estate of a victim of recent vampire related killings. Her father is suffering from Alzheimer’s and Lauren is battling her own demons as well.
I enjoyed this book and its Christian take on the vampire theme. I would recommend it to anyone that likes good fiction with a Christian perspective. A highly enjoyable read!

No He Can’t: How Barack Obama is Dismantling Hope and Change by Kevin McCullough is an excellent book on the presidency of Barack Obama. Kevin McCullough is the nationally syndicated radio talk show host of The Kevin McCullough Show and was also the first pundit to predict the victory of Obama back in December of 2006. The foreword is written by Mike Huckabee.
The author does a great job on presenting the reasons why Obama’s presidency has failed and how he has not followed up on promises made during the campaign. The book is divided into four parts; Economics, National Insecurity, Erosion of Rights, and Accountability to Caesar. Twenty-one chapters include “Punishing the Wealthy, Despising the Poor,” and “Deer-in-the-Headlights Foreign Policy.”
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in politics and also to anyone that is committed to change in 2012.
