Galileo by Mitch Stokes

Galileo by Mitch Stokes is part of the Christian Encounters series from Thomas Nelson Publishing. It presents a biography of Galileo that shows how he was basically an outsider during his whole life, due to his views and perceptions of the world and how it worked. Galileo’s father was responsible for instilling this attitude towards authority, he was quoted as saying “It appears to me, that they who rely simply on the weight of authority to prove any assertion, without searching out the arguments to support it, act absurdly. I wish to question freely and to answer freely without any sort of adulations. That well becomes any who are sincere in the search for truth.”

The book also tells of Galileo’s personal struggles with his faith at having been basically condemned by the church for his scientific views of the earth. He felt his cause was just both scientifically and theologically. He was first and foremost a Christian.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in history and the role that faith played in Galileo’s life.

Johann Sebastian Bach by Rich Marschall

Johann Sebastian Bach by Rick Marschall is part of the Christian Encounters series from Thomas Nelson Publishing. It presents a biography of Bach that includes both his music and his faith. The book does a good job on offering a complete picture of Bach even though there is little information available as Bach was not one for introspection.

I was interested to learn that Bach came from a very musical family, full of composers stretching back hundreds or years. It was also interesting to find out how much faith played a role in Bach’s compositions. This is a great book for the history lover!

I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in history or music and the faith that intertwines!

Unsinkable by Abby Sunderland

Unsinkable: A Young Woman’s Courageous Battle on the High Seas is the story of Abby Sunderland, who at 16 tried to become the youngest person to ever sail solo, nonstop, and unassisted around the world. And it is an amazing story indeed, the logistics are intricate and the obstacles sometimes insurmountable. Abby survives the attempt after becoming disabled in the Indian Ocean.

The book tells Abby’s story from her point of view. She explains how the trip changed her life and increased her faith in God and in her own abilities. She not only completed a geographical voyage, but a voyage of personal discovery as well. It is a great story of perseverance, faith and personal growth!

I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in sailing or wants to accomplish their own goal in life, it is truly inspiring!

Tandem by Tracey Bateman

Tandem by Tracey Bateman is a good Christian fiction book that delves into the currently popular world of vampires. It is Bateman’s second visit to the fictional town of Abbey Hills, Missouri. It is well-written and has a well-developed plot that tells the story of Lauren McBride who is an auctioneer that has been tasked with settling the estate of a victim of recent vampire related killings. Her father is suffering from Alzheimer’s and Lauren is battling her own demons as well.
I enjoyed this book and its Christian take on the vampire theme. I would recommend it to anyone that likes good fiction with a Christian perspective. A highly enjoyable read!

No He Can't: How Barack Obama is Dismantling Hope and Change by Kevin McCollough

No He Can’t: How Barack Obama is Dismantling Hope and Change by Kevin McCullough is an excellent book on the presidency of Barack Obama. Kevin McCullough is the nationally syndicated radio talk show host of The Kevin McCullough Show and was also the first pundit to predict the victory of Obama back in December of 2006. The foreword is written by Mike Huckabee.

The author does a great job on presenting the reasons why Obama’s presidency has failed and how he has not followed up on promises made during the campaign. The book is divided into four parts; Economics, National Insecurity, Erosion of Rights, and Accountability to Caesar. Twenty-one chapters include “Punishing the Wealthy, Despising the Poor,” and “Deer-in-the-Headlights Foreign Policy.”

I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in politics and also to anyone that is committed to change in 2012.

The Little Red Book of Wisdom by Mark DeMoss

The Little Red Book of Wisdom by Mark DeMoss is a great book filled with advice for both your professional and personal life. It presents wisdom from DeMoss’ own experience and also that passed down from his father, successful insurance entrepreneur, Arthur DeMoss.

Reggie by Reggie Dabbs

Reggie: You Can’t Change Your Past, but You Can Change Your Future is a great autobiography by Reggie Dabbs. Born to a 16 year old unwed mother, Reggie has the deck stacked against him, but overcomes the odds against him to become a successful motivational speaker coaching public school children. He teaches that life is about choices.

The book is divided into chapters that tell the reader how to know their story, truth, pain, choice, and Father, among others. Big Daddy, as Reggie calls the Heavenly Father, plays a big part in Reggie’s story and he interlaces the book with stories from the Bible and his world travels. This book is very inspiring and will be a great addition to anyone’s library!

I give the book five stars and would recommend it for any teens or parents of teens. You will be inspired!

Thank You, God, for Mommy by Amy Parker

Thank You, God, for Mommy by Amy Parker is a wonderful childrens book illustrated beautifully by Frank Endersby. It is presented as a prayer by a young panda bear offering thanks to God for his mother and all that she does for him.

This is a wonderful book that children will enjoy very much. My 4 year old really enjoyed the great pictures that accompany the story and had fun relating the book to his own great mommy! It also helps remind him to be thankful for the people in his life. It will be a great addition to your child's library.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has young children or that wants to present a thoughtful gift to a young child in their life.

The Story of the Bible by Larry Stone

The Story of the Bible: The Fascinating History of Its Writing, Translation & Effect on Civilization by Larry Stone is a wonderful resource to help you learn more about the Bible and how it came to be. It presents stories of those that sacrificed, some going so far as to giving their lives, to make the Bible available to God’s people. It is extremely interesting and grabs the reader’s attention from the very beginning.
Another wonderful feature of this volume is the 23 removable document recreations that accompany the text. They include reproductions of pages from some of history’s most important Bibles, such as the Gutenberg Bible, Book of Kells, Codex Sinaiticus and portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls. These documents add a significant amount of historical significance to this volume.
I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the Bible and how it came to be. It will provide hours of enjoyment to the entire family!

Doing Virtuous Business: The Remarkable Success of Spiritual Enterprise by Theodore Roosevelt Malloch

Doing Virtuous Business by Theodore Roosevelt Malloch is an excellent book that presents the theory that creating wealth through virtuous means is a Biblically sound principle. The book explores how companies that follow an ethical business model often perform at a higher level than their competitors.
This will be an excellent book for those that have the notion that capitalism is inherently evil as it presents the idea that business conducted ethically is actually a virtue. Those in business for themselves will gain valuable information from this book to use in their day-to-day operations.
I would quickly recommend this book to anyone that studies business or has an interest in learning more about businesses that operate in a Biblically ethical way.

The Band that Played On by Steve Turner

The Band that Played On by Steve Turner presents the inspiring story of the musicians on the fateful maiden voyage of the Titanic. It was very interesting to learn the life stories of these brave musicians that remained on board while the ship was sinking in order to help the other passengers remain calm.
This book presents information that has not been overly explored in previous Titanic publications. It will be of interest to Titanic and history buffs alike.
I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in the Titanic as well in an inspiring story of bravery and compassion!
